What is PRP Micro-Needling?
Microneedling has been around for several decades, and has a long track record of effectively treating fine lines, scars, stretch marks, skin laxity and hyper-pigmentation. Over the past few years, new techniques and innovations have made this great treatment even better.
Recently, there has been the addition of PRP. This minimally-invasive treatment has been shown in studies to reduce the appearance of scars and fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improve overall skin texture.
So, What is PRP?
PRP is short for Platelet-Rich Plasma. Our blood contains several components, and PRP is thought specifically to promote healing and support cell growth. Microneedling intentionally creates tiny holes in the top layer of skin using very fine needles, causing the body to respond and produce collagen. Collagen is the protein that helps give our skin strength and elasticity, and as we age, collagen production naturally begins to slow down which can lead to signs of aging such as wrinkling and sagging. When we combine the application of PRP with microneedling, we improve results dramatically.
In fact, a split-face study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25722599) showed significant improvement associated with the addition of PRP compared to microneedling with a normal Vitamin C serum. It is especially effective in the treatment of acne scarring.
How is PRP extracted?
To gather PRP a patient will have a small amount of blood drawn in office by one of our Licensed Nurses at the beginning of their appointment. This blood will be processed in a centrifuge to separate its different components. This may take about 10 to 15 minutes. Once processed, our skilled staff will remove the separated plasma and prepare it for use in your microneedling treatment.
What are the steps associated with this treatment?
The first step will be to have blood drawn. While the Platelet-Rich Plasma is being made ready, patients will be numbed topically to reduce any potential discomfort that the microneedling could cause. After numbing, the prepared PRP will be applied to your skin and microneedling will commence.
How long is a microneedling with PRP treatment?
Treatment will typically take an hour and a half from the time blood is drawn to completion. Of course, this can vary.
What should I do after treatment?
Following treatment, it is important that you avoid exercising, wearing makeup, and exposing your skin to the sun for 24-48 hours following treatment. Cool, moist compresses may be soothing post-treatment. Your esthetician will give you specific instructions at the time of consultation.
When I can expect results?
While one treatment can certainly offer benefits, we recommend multiple treatments for optimal results. Typically, 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart will allow you to see a decrease in scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and an improvement in skin texture.
