Men have not been left out of cosmetic surgery consideration. Their need for a youthful, energetic appearance has not been ignored. Here are some of the common topics and men’s cosmetic procedures we discuss with men on a regular basis.
- Liposuction:
Liposuction procedures are just as common in men as in women. The areas addressed most often are abdomen, hips, neck, and chest. Frequently, large breasts (gynecomastia) can be addressed with simple liposuction. We use a variety of liposuction techniques and state-of-the-art instrumentation to achieve maximum skin conformity after removal of subcutaneous fat. A discussion in regard to areas appropriate for liposuction and ones more appropriately treated with noninvasive techniques such as Cool Sculpting can be carried out at the time of consultation.
- Gynecomastia:
Sometimes suction alone is not adequate to relieve gynecomastia. Open procedures are available to resect breast tissue for men. These leave minimal scars and produce pleasing results. These procedures may be covered by insurance, though only by evaluation and preauthorization can one make that determination.
- Rhinoplasty:
A series of procedures for nose re-shaping is similarly popular for men. The airway is of prime concern. Exercise tolerance is improved dramatically with an open nasal airway. Techniques for changing the shape of the nose, keeping it masculine in appearance, are practiced regularly. Again, planning such procedures with photographs helps achieve the desired results for both function and appearance.
- Eyelid surgery:
Eyelid surgery is both functional and cosmetic. When the upper lids become redundant, hanging over the lashes and obstructing the visual field, there is a strong functional component. Relief of that problem is achieved by resecting the skin and muscle redundancies. Lower eyelids can be addressed in a separate setting or at the same time. Frequently, “bags” are found on the lower lids. These can be removed as their cause is herniated fat from around the eyeball. Redundant skin can be excised and a more youthful appearance is achieved. Sometimes brow lift surgery is combined and endoscopic techniques with incisions above the hairline make those procedures much more acceptable without visible scarring.
- Face and neck lifts:
Face and neck lifts are tailored for men in different ways from these procedures for women. This has to do with the hair-bearing skin on the face and our desire to make sure that no hair-bearing skin is brought to inappropriate places. Sometimes a direct excision of the neck is beneficial for men. It may leave a scar but that scar fades well considering the bearded nature of the neck skin. In any event, careful consultation with a description of a patients desires and their expectations will help determine the most appropriate procedures.
All of our non-invasive techniques including the use of Botox and Filler injectables and as mentioned the use of cool sculpt are all appropriate for men and are carried out for them on a regular basis.
In short, many of the procedures that are more commonly associates in our practice for women are modified and tailored for our male population and it is no longer a secret that men are just as interested in a youthful and healthy appearance as are women.
