In pursuit of staying young, many people spend lots of money on the latest anti-wrinkle cream or age-defying cosmetics. Unfortunately, most of these products only work for a few minutes to a few hours. That is why more people are opting for longer lasting wrinkle solutions such as facelifts. Typically, people who’ve had facelifts tend to look better for years. However, that may not be an option for everyone. Some people would prefer not to have surgery. Thankfully, improvements can be achieved non-surgically through Botox® and fillers.
Botox® injections are helpful in correcting facial aging. It contains botulinum toxin that suppress the muscular nerve signals that cause skin to wrinkle. After your first treatment you will see smoother results in a few days to one week. The effects of Botox® can last up to 4 to 6 months.
Fillers are another long lasting option in fighting lines, wrinkles and folds. They do not manipulate muscle function like botulinum toxins do. Fillers are injectable gels that contain natural or synthetic compounds designed to ‘fill-in’ and diminish wrinkles. Juvederm® and Restylane®, made of naturally derived hyaluronic acids, add fullness to facial areas that become hollow with age, such as cheeks and brows. They are also used to add fullness to lips and diminish the look of dark circles around the eyes. The effects last about 4 to 12 months.
There are also fillers such as Radiesse® and Sculptra®. Radiesse® contains calcium hydroxylapatite in small microspheres that simulate the body’s natural collagen production to reduce the signs of aging. Radiesse® is commonly used at the folds on the sides of the nose and chin. Its effects can last up to 18 months. Sculptra® injectable gel contains synthetic poly-L-lactic acids that help replace lost collagen. It is designed to gradually add volume to the face to fill out wrinkles and reestablish the fullness seen in youthful faces; over time. It may take three periodic injections to achieve desirable results that last 2 years with some patients seeing benefit for up to 5 years.
The most “permanent” filler option, although surgical, is fat grafting. A person’s own fat, collected through liposuction, can be used to fill-in any trouble spot in the face (cheeks, jaw line, lips, and eyelids). It is more of a procedure than non-invasive fillers and Botox® and can last indefinitely. Unfortunately, the effect can also be lost quickly if the fat does not survive the transfer.
When deciding to have any of the procedures mentioned in this blog, it is helpful to keep in mind that individual results may vary.
